Weaves, finishes, and grades: everything you need to know.
The Essence of Quality,
Not all Panama Hats are created equal. From premium grade onward, we offer clearly superior quality and first-class finishes in every piece. At Bravo Hats we work with the highest artisanal standards—discover our quality guide and choose the level of excellence that fits your style.
Our HistoryQuality Guide
Excellence in Every Fiber
Quality is measured by the fineness of the weave: the number of weaves per linear inch. The higher the count, the finer and more valuable the hat. From premium onward, every piece receives first-class finishes and careful attention from our workshop. Each category represents a step up in craftsmanship—from reliable everyday wear to exceptional collector pieces.

Grade 1-2
Premium
A refined introduction to the Panama hat: 100–180 weaves per inch. Durable and versatile for daily wear. Each piece is finished in our workshop with care for a clean, elegant silhouette worthy of the toquilla tradition.
Crafting time: 1-2 days
Weave Counting Method
Selection of a weave section
A representative part of the crown is chosen where the weave is even.
Measurement of one linear inch
A ruler is placed along one line of the weave (not square inches—we count weaves per linear inch).
Counting the weaves
The number of complete weaves (strand crossings) along that inch is counted. This gives the weaves-per-inch (WPI) that defines the grade.
Why weaves per inch matter
- • Higher weaves per inch = finer, more valuable hat.
- • More weaves mean greater flexibility, softness, and natural sheen.
- • Finer weaves require more time and skill from the artisan.
- • From premium onward, we apply first-class finishes to every hat.
Care and Maintenance
The beauty of a Panama Hat endures with proper care. We recommend storing in cool, dry places, gently cleaning with a damp cloth, and avoiding prolonged sun exposure to preserve its color and structure.
